About us
The Government Flying Training School (GFTS) at Jakkur, Bangalore, was set up in 1950 and is one of the oldest flying schools in the country. The state-owned flying training school offers tenured programs leading to issue of Commercial Pilot License (CPL) and Private Pilot License (PPL) for aspiring candidates. GFTS is spread over an area of 214 acres which include facilities for flight training (“Training School”), area leased to private parties for hangars and maintenance activities and other common facilities (airstrip, fuel station etc.).

Is Government Flying Training School (GFTS) a government-run institute?
Yes. GFTS operates under the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, and has trained pilots since 1950, making it one of India's oldest flying schools.
Is GFTS DGCA-approved and currently operational?
Yes. After a licence suspension from December 2023, GFTS received a fresh DGCA licence renewal valid from 16 July 2026 to 15 July 2031, following comprehensive safety inspections. Admissions and training have both resumed.
What is the CPL fee at GFTS Jakkur, and does it differ for Karnataka residents?
Per GFTS's official fee schedule, CPL fees are ₹37,00,000 for Karnataka-domicile students and ₹42,00,000 for others.
Does GFTS offer PPL as well as CPL?
Yes. Alongside CPL (about 24 months, 200 flying hours), GFTS offers PPL (about 12 months, minimum 40 flying hours) at ₹10,00,000 (Karnataka) / ₹15,00,000 (others).
What are the eligibility requirements for CPL at GFTS?
Minimum age 17 (not advisable to start after 35 due to airline hiring cutoffs), 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics, and a Class II medical certificate initially (upgraded to Class I before the CPL is issued).
